Celebrating events with conscious choices and collaboration
Symphony of Sustainability, developed by Trashverse India Foundation, is a comprehensive framework encapsulating the essence of a Zero Waste event. It highlights the power of conscious choices made throughout the planning and execution process to achieve a harmonious blend where the joy and celebration of the occasion exist in perfect alignment with environmental responsibility. This concept emphasizes that sustainability isn't a compromise but rather an integral part of creating a meaningful and impactful event.
This model strictly adheres to the Waste Management Hierarchy (Avoid, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, Treat, Dispose) to maximize resource recovery and minimize environmental impact. Crucially, it emphasizes social inclusion by creating dignified livelihood opportunities for informal waste workers and integrating local social enterprises into the sustainable supply chain.
We go beyond simple waste reduction, acting as the central conductor coordinating with stakeholders – event organizer, participants, vendors for food & decoration, venue partner, authorized end destination for waste processing, volunteers etc – in a concerted effort to minimize environmental impact.
Impact: Engaged 989 participants, demonstrating a significant reach for awareness on waste management practices.
Key Interventions: Successfully implemented practical solutions like replacing plastic water bottles with water dispensers and providing bins at multiple collection points, highlighting a focus on reducing single-use plastics and promoting responsible waste disposal.
Learnings: Identified a crucial need for stronger collaboration with regular collection agencies to ensure efficient data collection and waste disposal, providing a valuable lesson for future events.
Impact: Managed 279.1 kg of waste, with an impressive 83% successfully diverted from landfills, showcasing significant waste reduction capabilities for events under 300 guests.
Key Interventions: Highlighted the importance of strict waste segregation at the source, particularly in kitchen premises, to prevent contamination and maximize waste diversion.
Learnings: Pioneered the use of reusable crockery to avoid single-use disposables and incorporated upcycled cloth bags (thamboolam/gift bags), demonstrating creative and effective waste management solutions.
Impact: Managed a substantial 1045.75 kg of waste, with 60.98% diverted from landfills, proving the scalability of zero-waste principles for larger, multi-venue and multi-day events (under 600 guests).
Key Interventions: Implemented innovative solutions such as using recycled tissue paper instead of traditional virgin tissue and successfully integrated informal waste workers, showcasing a commitment to both environmental and social impact.
Learnings: Emphasized the critical role of strong vendor support and accountability in achieving zero-waste goals, underscoring the need for collaborative efforts across all stakeholders.
